ENPARK’s First 2011 ‘Green Brunch’ to Focus on Region’s Solid Waste Recycling and Management Industry

Region’s Use-and-Throw Culture Places GCC among World’s Leading Solid Waste Producers, Says TECOM Spokesperson

Dubai-UAE: 22 January, 2011 – The Energy and Environment Park (ENPARK), a member of TECOM Investments’ Sciences Cluster, today announced it is set to host its first activity for the year with a seminar on solid waste recycling and management, a key environmental issue facing the region.
To be held on 25 January at the Amwaj Rotana Hotel in Dubai, the session will see industry experts to offer insights into the scale of solid waste output in the region which is among the highest in the world. It will also examine the advanced technology that is being deployed in the recycling and disposal processes. Additionally, projects that have used bio-waste to produce green energy as well as trends in electronic waste that involve the disposal of products with toxic contaminants will be highlighted.
Putting the event into context, Dr. Ayesha M. Abdullah, Managing Director of TECOM’s Science Cluster, said: “It is time to come to terms with the fact that our region has among the world’s highest per capita carbon emissions as well as per capita solid waste output. In certain ways, the dual distinctions reveal the wasteful patterns our society has fallen into, which is typified by the ever growing ‘use and throw’ culture.  All of us have an urgent duty to monitor how we individually use our resources and dispose our waste. It is also imperative to adopt habits that prioritise the welfare of the environment over our personal convenience.”
Ahmed Lootah, Senior Business Development Manager, ENPARK, said: “ENPARK is pleased to bring together leading minds with pioneering experience in the region under one roof. I am confident the deliberations that ensue from this installment of the Green Brunch will significantly contribute towards highlighting this pressing issue in the public domain, as well as consolidate community efforts towards a cleaner, sustainable environment.”
During the event, Averda, an environmental services company, will focus on the cleaning, collection, recovery and disposal of waste, while Dulsco’s Waste Management Services (WMS) will outline the effective solutions delivered by its range of innovative and award-winning waste management products.
Peter Neuschaefer, Director of Environment, Water and Energy in the Middle East for Waagner Biro Gulf, will speak on the subject of biomass and wastewater treatment practices. Waagner Biro Gulf is a Dubai-based contractor and facility manager of bridges, opening bridges, hydro-mechanical steel structures, waste recycling, waste water treatment plants, wetland systems and marine works.
The event will conclude with a presentation from Enviroserve CEO Stuart Fleming, who will touch upon regional initiatives that address the potent threat of electronic waste. The company specialises in offering environmental products, services and consultancy to aid best practices and savings in the region.
In 2010, ENPARK organised similar educational seminars on ‘Energy Efficiency’, ‘Green Retrofitting’ and ‘Water and Wastewater Management’.
All seminars featured presentations and open debates to help raise awareness of new energy and environment-related technologies as well as solutions available in the regional market. The events drew enthusiastic participation from the local building industry and business communities.
