Dubai International Film Festival announces support for 5 new Arab films through Enjaaz post-production support

Total of 20 films supported in 2011; 14 Enjaaz films in 8th DIFF lineup

Dubai, UAE; December 12, 2011: The eighth Dubai International Film Festival, held under the patronage
of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President & Prime Minister and
Ruler of Dubai, has selected five additional films from the Arab world to receive post-production funding
as part of the second cycle of its Enjaaz post-production support programme for 2011. This takes the
total number of films from the region to receive the post-production support of DIFF this year to 20.

An integral part of DIFF’s comprehensive script-to-screen initiative, the Dubai Film Market, Enjaaz
provides post-production support of up to US$100,000 per project to help Arab and Arab-origin
filmmakers bridge the gap between production and a screen-ready product.

The five additional projects, comprising documentaries and feature films, are from the UAE, Egypt,
Morocco, Algeria, France, Lebanon and Palestine. They were selected from more than 110 entries, and
include:

•

The Infiltrators by Palestinian director Khaled Jarar - a documentary that unravels the attempts
of soldiers to crossover to the other side – some of which are successful, and some end in
failure.

A co-production of UAE and Lebanon 39 Seconds by Lara Saba questions whether our destiny is
pre-determined or can be altered by the decisions we make. The narrative is described through
the story of various individuals, whose lives seem to change in less than 39 seconds.

•

•

10 Years, an Egyptian and UAE co-production by filmmaker Mahmood Soliman, began circa
2002, following an Egyptian woman who sharpened knives on the street to make ends meet.
Despite her hardships, she was determined to ensure that her children do not undergo the
suffering that she did. Soliman returns 10 years later to see how things have changed since
January 2011.

•

Morocco and France co-production My Brother by Kamal El Mahouti confronts the dilemma
of an artist caught between the two countries and is set against the backdrop of the rhythmic
Gnawa folk music. Moroccan immigrant Mo Bensalah’s very essence is visible in his art, with his
internal voice and feelings guiding viewers to the core of his identity crisis.

•

A co-production of Algeria, France and UAE, Ouardia Once Had Sons by director Djamila
Sahraoui narrates the story of Ouardia, who has buried her son, a soldier possibly killed by his
own brother, in the isolated Algerian countryside. In this setting tense with pain and brittle with
drought, life will reassert itself.

Fourteen Enjaaz films from the 2010 and 2011 funding cycles are screening in DIFF 2011, including:
Christina Foerch Saab’s Che Guevara Died in Lebanon; Wissam Charaf’s It’s All in Lebanon; Youcef Joe
Bou Edi’s Heels of War; Danielle Arbid’s Beirut Hotel; Daniel Joseph’s Taxi Ballad; Simon El-Habre’s Gate
#5; Narjiss Nejjar’s The Rif Lover; Nadim Mishlawi’s Sector Zero; Yahya AlAbdallah’s The Last Friday;
Laith Al-Juneidi’s The Invisible Policeman; Aseel Mansour’s Uncle Nashaat; Ahmad Rashwan’s Born on
the 25th of January; Rami Nihawi’s Yamo and Susan Youssef’s romantic interlude Habibi Rasak Kharban.

Shivani Pandya, Managing Director, Dubai International Film Festival, said: “Post-production is one of
the critical phases, where filmmakers clearly benefit from additional support that not only enables the
timely completion of their project but also helps them to bring the desired quality. We are delighted
that earlier Enjaaz supported projects are now screening at DIFF, and the new selection of projects will
further help in creating a new and vibrant roster of Arabic films.”

Launched in 2009, the Festival’s Enjaaz programme has supported more than 30 Arab and Arab-origin
films including Egyptian inner city drama Cairo Exit, UAE heritage biopic Hamama, and Iraqi feature
Leaving Baghdad, among others. The deadline for submissions for the next cycle of Enjaaz is February 1,
2012.

Dubai, UAE; December 12, 2011: ‘One Night to Change Lives,’ the black-tie charity evening
organized by the 8th Dubai International Film Festival and luxury Swiss watch manufacturer
IWC Schaffhausen, under the patronage of UN Messenger of Peace HRH Princess Haya Bint
Al Hussein, wife of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime
Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, raised about US$ 1 million, with the proceeds to go
for the UAE-based philanthropic organization Dubai Cares and global development and aid
agency, Oxfam.

Held at Armani Hotel Dubai, the charity dinner and auction, featuring an array of treasured
celebrity items and experiences, was attended by a bevy of celebrities including Hollywood
star Owen Wilson; the Danish fashion model and photographer Helena Christensen, and
Indian actor and social activist Rahul Bose – both Oxfam ambassadors; singer Ronan Keating
who performed with his land; Egyptian star Amr Waked and Emirati filmmaker Ali Mustafa.

DIFF Chairman Abdulhamid Juma, said: “We are honoured that ‘One Night to Change Lives,’
hosted as part of the eighth edition of DIFF, has contributed to bring about meaningful
change and difference to the lives of communities and individuals around the world,
including the Middle East, Asia and Africa. The overwhelming response to the charity
auction illustrates the genuine commitment of the people to make a difference to the
lives of those less fortunate. With the proceeds of the auction going to the valuable work
of Dubai Cares and Oxfam, everyone involved, especially the bidders, can be assured that
every single dollar raised will be used to benefit those who are truly in need. ”

Tariq Al Gurg, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Cares, said: “During the charity gala,
members of the UAE community extended their generous support to the needy around
the world – it was truly a testament to the spirit of philanthropy that exists here in the
UAE. The money raised will support Dubai Cares primary education programmes that are
currently reaching 5 million beneficiaries in 24 developing countries around the world,
giving more children and their communities hope to turn their dreams into reality. We are
grateful to HRH Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, the Dubai International Film Festival and IWC
Schaffhausen for providing this wonderful platform and to our donors for their support.”

Oxfam Chief Executive Dame Barbara Stocking, said: “We are delighted by the
overwhelming success of this auction which has raised valuable funds for Oxfam’s life-
changing work around the world; and are very grateful for the generosity shown by the

people of the UAE. We sincerely appreciate the support extended to us by HRH Princess
Haya, the Dubai International Film Festival, IWC Schaffhausen, and by the many celebrities
and Oxfam ambassadors who have helped to make this auction such a wonderful event. We
hope that this charity gala is the first of many such successful initiatives in the region.”

In a strong demonstration of the support to the less-fortunate communities globally,
participants at the charity auction stepped forward to promote educational opportunities in
Pakistan through a bid to support schools in the country.

The charity gala raised US$710,000 for funding 24 schools in Pakistan with the Varkey
GEMS Foundation contributing US$300,000 to support 10 schools, while other supporters
confirmed funding for the rest of the schools.

The Varkey GEMS Foundation is a not-for-profit education foundation and is the
philanthropic arm of GEMS Education, the largest kindergarten to grade 12 private
education operator in the world. Dino Varkey of The Varkey GEMS Foundation, said: “It was
a privilege to support such a worthy cause. When an underprivileged child is provided with
access to education it is not only the child itself that is positively impacted but his or her
family and the broader community."

One of the biggest attractions at the auction was a luxury IWC Swiss watch, designed
especially for the charity gala, which was auctioned for US$85,000. The Pablo Picasso
masterpiece ‘Bacchanale au Taureau’ went for US$ 50,000, and an outstanding artwork by
an Emirati artist Mattar Bin Lahej was auctioned for US$ 30,000.

A stunning handcrafted jewellery piece co-created by Livia Firth to wear to the Golden
Globes, where husband Colin won the Best Actor award, was auctioned for US$25,000.
This bespoke item has been created entirely from precious stones, set with over 400 black
diamonds, rubies, purple spinels and South Sea pearls in 18ct white gold, and is ethically and
sustainably sourced. Among the unique celebrity items auctioned were two tickets to the
world premiere of The Avengers, donated by Scarlett Johansson, which fetched US$22,000.
The winning bidder also has the opportunity to meet Scarlett at the premiere.

An exciting Alec Baldwin experience auctioned for as much as US$14,000. As part of the
package, two people will be flown to New York to stay in a luxury hotel. They will later enjoy
a private yoga class with Alec Baldwin, taught by his partner Hilaria Thomas at the Yoga
Vida centre in New York. An Armani Hotel Dubai experience was bid for US$4,000. The gala
dinner also raised significant funds through table seats and raffle draws.

Founded in 2007 by HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Cares is working
to improve children’s access to quality primary education in developing countries. The
philanthropic organization expresses the UAE's commitment to achieve, by 2015, the United
Nations Millennium Development Goals (UN MDG) 2 and 3 - namely, to guarantee universal
primary education and to promote gender equality, respectively. It is also helping to forge a
global partnership for development, as represented by UN MDG 8.

Oxfam has been engaged in the Arabian Gulf for almost 4 years and, in addition to Dubai
Cares, has also established partnerships with the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation,
AlWaleed Bin Talal Foundation, AGFUND and the UAE Red Crescent. Moreover, last week,
Oxfam received a generous grant from H.H. Sheikha Jawaher Al Qasimi's initiative ‘Salam
Ya Sughar Fund’ for education, food security and enhancing opportunities for the people of
Gaza to earn a livelihood.

Intimate sketch of Monroe, live performance of Parisian all-girls band and diverse roster of global cinema on Tuesday at 8th DIFF

Dubai, UAE; December 12, 2011: With one day to go for the eighth Dubai International Film Festival to
conclude, film lovers have several visual treats in store on Tuesday (December 13) including an intimate
portrait of the Hollywood icon, Marilyn Monroe; a live jig of an all-female Parisian band; and a series of
award-winning films drawn from all over the world.

The magical week that aspiring filmmaker Colin Clark spent with Marilyn Monroe, offering an
uncommonly intimate look into the unseen facets of one of the world’s most famous celebrities is the
theme of My Week with Marilyn. The film’s director Simon Curtis will walk the red carpet along with a
bevy of stars from international cinema from 7 pm.

The excitement shifts to The Walk at Jumeirah Beach Residence, where the Rhythm & Reels screening
of the American biopic The Girls in The Band will be held, open for free to the public. Directed by Judy
Chaikin, the film, making its international premiere at DIFF, is an inspiring story about female jazz
musicians and big band instrumentalists from the 1930s jazz era. Accompanying the screening is a
special performance by Parisian band Certains L’Aiment Chaud (Some Like It Hot), an all-female French
band, comprising Kiki Desplat, Sylvette Claudet, Shona Taylor, Nathalie Renault, and Claude Jeantet, that
celebrate the sound of early jazz.

Another international premiere that will appeal to young and old alike is The 99 Unbound, the first time
ever that the superheroes famously created by Kuwaiti Dr Naif Al-Mutawa appear on the big screen.
The film, directed by Dave Osborne, will be screened at 5.30 pm at First Group Theatre. Screening in the
Arabian Nights programme of the festival, the animated film is the result of years of campaigning by Al-
Mutawa, and aims to take the Islamic tradition to children around the world in the most accessible and
compelling way.

On Tuesday, audiences can also revel in two of the master-works by German director Werner Herzog,
who is the Lifetime Achievement Honouree at DIFF this year. These include the classic Fitzcarraldo
(Mall of the Emirates Vox Cinemas 9 at 2.30 pm) about an obsessed opera lover who wants to build an
opera house in the jungle; and Herzog’s new documentary Into the Abyss (First Group Theatre, 9 pm),
where the director uses a triple homicide that took place in Texas as a springboard to explore capital
punishment.

A project supported by DIFF’s post-production funding programme, Enjaaz, the Lebanese documentary
Yamo by director Rami Nihawi will be screened at 6.15 pm at MoE 4. In Yamo, the protagonist lives with
his mother, sister and brother in a house that resembles the community they live in. They communicate
through silences, unspoken words, furious clashes and repeated negotiations.

A Lebanese film that made its world premiere at DIFF, Nice to Meet You by directors Rodrigue Sleiman
and Tarek El Bacha will screen at 10.15 pm at MoE 7. An Arabian Nights selection at DIFF, the film is
about Eddy who has been delivering and installing gas cylinders for 12 years. As he makes his delivery
rounds, he conjures up stories about his life, lifestyle and Lebanon, some involving his equally sardonic
and witty friends.

The Mexican film Carriere 250 Metres (4 pm, MoE 8) by director Juan Carlos Rulfo is a portrait
documentary and poetic travelogue inspired by the intellect and imagination of the renowned French
screenwriter Jean-Claude Carriere. The title refers to Carriere’s visit, with his six-year-old daughter to
the cemetery where he will be buried, which is roughly 250 metres from where he was born.

Among other must-watch films is the Vietnamese film, Mother’s Soul (9.45 pm, MoE 10) which made
its world premiere at DIFF. Directed by Nhue Giang Pham, the film looks at the effect of capitalism on a
former communist economy through the life of a young girl who suffers from lack of maternal affection.

The DIFF box office is open online at www.dubaifilmfest.com and at the DIFF box offices in Dubai Media
City, JBR The Walk, Mall of the Emirates and Madinat Jumeirah. Additional information is also available
through the Festival’s dedicated customer care number, 363 FILM (3456).
